Register notes : Jewers says: Henry Bonner a Justice of Peace during the Commonwealth period ... used a small folio... notebook originally belonging ... to Arthur Duck Chancellor of Bath & Wells d 1649... turning ends with it... to enter a list of parish registrars whom he had sworn in; and to record the Marriages he had performed according to the Act of Parliament (14 Aug 1653) establishing Civil Marriages. ...Most of the marriages are stated to have taken place at Justice Bonner's own house (Waterleston in the Parish of Combe St Nicholas), though he appears to have officiated at several other places round that neighbourhood : ... he was certainly a great marrying man, for the list will be found to far exceed the record in the register of the largest parish for the same period. The parishes of the marriage parties are largely within a 10 mile radius of Waterleston, mostly in Somerset, a few in Devon.
