Notes about the Church |
These Marriages are in a Commonwealth Register kept by Henry Bonner of Waterleston, who was appointed Sherriff of the South Petherton Hundred in 1649, and as JP, would have held a position of power and authority in these Commonwealth times.
He was probably the Henry Bonner the elder Esq of Waterleston whose Will was proved 14 Mar 1668/9 by his eldest son & executor Henry Bonner.
The surviving Combe St Nicholas registers start in 1678, (after this register had ended) so Henry Bonner's origins are unclear but he or his predecessors were associated with "Waterleston, Combe St Nicholas" from at least 1637: see https://somerset-cat.swheritage.org.uk/search/all:records/0_50/all/score_desc/waterleston
The Historic England II* listing of Waterleston (https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1249296?section=official-list-entry) records the Weston Farm former Manor as a house of Late Medieval period, though later much restored & altered.
The Combe St Nicholas website (https://combestnicholas.org.uk/town-history/) refers to an "existing Chapel, daughter to the ... Church at Combe..." at Waterleston, though the Chapel is not mentioned in the Historic England listing.
It is not known whether the Marriages took place in the Chapel or not. Where given in the register the Parish of the bride and groom is recorded but they are from a wide area, not just Combe St Nicholas
