Register notes : | I, C.W.S. Corser, M. A. Oxon. have at the request and with the permission of the present Rector, Rev. E. J. Carlos, M. A. examined and gone through the Registers of the Parish Church of Cheadle Staffordshire. I find them to consist of:- 3 parchment books, stitched but unbound, somewhat dirty and torn (1569 to 1674). 4 paper books, also stitched but unbound and in places much torn (1674 to 1773). [In all of the above the Registers of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials are for the most part mixed together. The first date which I can decipher is A. D. 1569, but what I take to be the Rector's signature at this period is to me illegible, though doubtless not so to an expert in old writing.] Further: Bound Registers 4 Books of Baptisms 7 Books of Marriages 3 Books of Burials 5 Parchment Summaries of Baptisms, Marriages ans Burials: apparently copies of the Registers made to be exhibited to the Bishop at his Triennial Visitation. Further: 7 Books of Banns of Marriage of which the old ones are worthless and should, in my opinion, be destroyed, to set free the room which they occupy in the Parish Chests. From 1569 to 1599 the Registers are partly in English partly in Latin: from 1629 onward they are entirely in English. The last of the unprinted and mixed Registers ends in 1773. After this period, the Baptism, Marriages and Burials are entered in separate printed books. Many of the earlier entries seem to have been made by the Parish Clerk. At least is is difficult to believe that in 1663 the Rector of Cheadle persistently wrote "babtised", "buryed". So in 1796 af a Davit maide = affidavit made (in a banns). Of course, owing to the erratic spelling even of educated men at this period, no argument based on such evidence is conclusive. Up to 1773 the books are torn in some places and apparently some entries have been cut out. From 1674 to 1773 there seems to have been a good deal of careless mess in the making of the entries and in their preservation. Thus in 1756 a man and woman are stated to have been married while below a long entry is made to the effect that their Banns were thrice published in the year 1757 - the year after! Perhaps, on the whole, the Registers before 1674 were more carefully made than those from 1674 to 1773. At any rate I have found an occasional attempt to keep the Baptisms, Marriages and Burials separate. The following headings in Latin show that the Parson began his year with a virtuous effort at method: the date is 1575. Catalogue (sic) omnium eorum qui matrimonium inivenent in ecclesia de Chedwell in comitatu Stafford Anno Dmi. 1575. Again, in 1599 Catalogus omnium eorum qui sepulti fuerunt in ecclesia de Chedwell Anno 1599.1600. There is throughout the Registers an entire absence of any informal Memoranda such as would furnish data for a Parish History. Possibly the Churchwardens' accounts may supply matter of interest to antiquarians or old world gossips, but I would here warn the curious that they will only waste their time if they search in these books for anything beyond mere list of names with an occasional entry such as the following:- "There was a Confirmation held at this Church July 4th 1698." Memorand: That on Tuesday being ye 21st day of July Anno Domn. 1730 a true Coppy of this Register was ingrossed uppon Partchment and exhibited at the Bishop's Triennial Visitation held at Stafford ye same day. John Chilton B. D. Rector Wm. Burnett , Saml. Weston Churchwardend. The only entries which have anything approaching an extra-parochial or national significance are those referring to the law as to woollen shrouds. Thus Nov. 11. 1678, Aaron Berisford Junior was buryed according to law in wollin befor Mr. Jonothon Wordnoth Justis of the year. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Subjoined is a list in order, with dates of the Rectors of Cheadle, so far as I can ascertain them from entries made in the Registers or from their signatures to entries of Baptisms Marriages or Burials. I have also enclosed in Brackets the names of the Curates, so far as they were ascertainable. 1569 First legible date, but Rector's name is to me illegible till 1599 Rauff Turner (Query Rector) [1607 Vamletus (?)
