How you can Contribute

Our biggest need is for transcribers of parish records.
The only requirement is a good eye for reading handwriting, patience and some very basic skills with a computer. It is a function that can be performed anywhere in the world.
It involves as much time as you are willing to commit to the project; from as little as an hour per week to several hours per day. It is up to you.

As shown in the FreeBMD project, contributions of transcriptions by thousands of individuals each taking some small part of the information base can create a database of hundreds of millions of records. A database that is one of the most essential tools for all who research their ancestry in the UK accessible to all who have access to an internet connection.

If each of you were to undertake to transcribe just one parish register for FreeREG just imagine how quickly you could access the information you need to break down a brick wall in your research.

If you have managerial or technical skills (Html and/or Perl) and are willing to make a longer term commitment, we would love to talk to you about joining the team as a county coordinator or member of the programming support team.

Want to know a little more before talking to one of us? Then have a look in our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

Thinking of volunteering? Simply send an email to our Volunteer Coordinators In the email let us know interests and the county involved.
