If you want to volunteer to take on the task for a coordinating a syndicate encompasing one or more county or just part of a county, having considered the responsibilities given below, then contact the FreeREG Executive

If you want to volunteer to provide data, then contact the Data Coordinators

Also see: Project Coordination Structure

Responsibilities of a Coordinator include:

  1. To recruit and train volunteers to transcribe registers and upload them to the FreeREG server.
  2. To arrange for data for transcription. This may actually be your biggest task. Advise on how to get started is given in the Data page.
  3. To identify and solicit contributions of existing transcriptions.
  4. To correspond with volunteers providing data for your syndicate.
  5. To handle queries from volunteers (although we hope most questions will go to the mailing list or discussion group) If in doubt then refer to one of the Executive, and we will try to invent an answer ;-)
  6. To keep tabs on who is doing what, and which parishes have been done.
  7. To update the county web pages when new parish data has been added to the data base and to submit to the WebMasters on a monthly basis. See advise for editing the county page for details.
  8. To gather data files from volunteers and pass them on to the data coordinator for uploading if they are not sent in direct. If data files are not in our standard format ready to be incorporated into the database, to pass them to one of the data editing volunteers.
  9. To establish a syndicate discussion group and/or mailing list to use for passing information to your team and answering their questions.
  10. To work with other Coordinators through the FREEREG-CORE mailing list and discussion group and to keep the Country Coordinators informed of Country-wide issues
  11. To inform the Executive of improvements that should be made to FreeREG.
  12. To inform the Web Managers of problems with the website.
  13. To inform the Executive of their physical mailing address.

We hope that enquiries from volunteers will start to come direct to you, but any that we receive will be forwarded onto you.

It might also be a good idea to get used to what is already answered on the web pages, and point people there.

That will save you a lot of time too when answering enquiries.

You also have the support of the Country Coordinators.
