The following page is intended for the use of persons contributing data to FreeREG. It provides links to a number of resources that a transcriber will need at some point in their work.

Many of the issues faced by transcribers are answered here.

If you cannot find the answer to your question, then, in this order,
- Contact your Coordinator
- Send a message to the Transcribers Mail Group stating the nature of the problem in the subject line. This is a closed group to avoid Spam and you need to tell us if you wish to join if you have not already done so.
- Send a message to the Executive stating the nature of the problem in the subject line.

Uploading data to FreeREG

To upload files login to the FreeREG Server at http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Login.pl
(Please do not try to login through the Rootsweb entry into FreeREG. IT WILL NOT WORK.)

Please read the data entry pages on the format and structure of FreeREG files before trying to upload a data file for the first time.
Go to the file upload instruction page for detailed information on managing your files on the FreeREG server.
But remember you must have first registered with FreeREG before trying to upload data.
(Please note that the UserID and password cannot contain special characters or a space. Also, your registration is not complete until you have responded to an email that you will receive.)

Lastly, please make sure you have have contacted the county co-ordinator before registering.

Special Data Entry Concerns

When dealing with registers that are often several hundred years old there are many issues arising from changes in language usage that can prove to be a challenge to the transcriber.

Information for Coordinators

Coordinators are responsible for organizing the FreeREG activities within their specific counties. The following information pages provide guidance on how they might approach their responsibilities.


If you experience errors while using FreeREG please report them to the Webmasters, indicating what you were doing (i.e. submitting, searching), the URL of the page involved and the exact time (and timezone) where it occurred. If you have suggestions on improvements to FreeREG please make them to the FreeREG Executive. If you believe there to be a problem with any of the data entered into the database please contact the Corrections Coordinators. In your email please include information on the county and place of the record.
